13 year old Steven has a normal life. He plays drums in the All-Star Jazz Band, has a crush on the hottest girl in the year, and gets constantly annoyed by his 5 year old brother, Jeffery.
Having Jeffery as a brother is a pain. Actually, more than a pain. Its an unrelenting nightmare. Its not because Jeffery is way cuter than Steven, although that's part of it. Jeffery has perfect white teeth, 20-20 vision, and little blond ringlets you see in cathedrals, when Steven is the complete opposite. Steven has mouse-brown cowlick-y hair, glasses that are about an inch thick, and braces that look like he tried to swallow a train wreck. Steven wonders if anyone actually likes him. The reason why Steven hates Jeff so much is because he WORSHIPS him.
However, Steven's life changes dramatically. After a major nosebleed, his family is told by the doctor that Jeffery has leukemia, a bone cancer. His mom quits her job as a teacher to take care of Jeffery. Its not going to work out well with a silent, non-speaking dad, a worried mom, a crazy teenager, an angel and bankruptcy. Steven is forced to deal with his brother's illness, his parents' attempts to keep the family in one piece, the band, overdue homework, school-counseling, girls, and of course, dangerous pie. (you have to read the book to know what it is!!) What will happen to Steven and his family?
